Solar Power in Maryland and New Jersey

Maryland and New Jersey are two states moving forward with solar energy. The Garden States's Renewable Portfolio Standard requires that more than 22 percent of the state's electricity come from renewable sources by 2021 and New Jersey is second only to California in the number of homes and businesses which have solar panels installed. New Jersey has installed 22,014 solar photovoltaic installations with a total output of 1,078 megawatts.

If you travel around New Jersey, you will see many solar panels attached to utility poles and street lights. In fact, the largest utility company in the state in 2009 launched a program to install solar panels on 200,000 utility poles, which is the largest project of its kind in the world.

Maryland is another state with a robust solar energy program. While not as ambitious as New Jersey's, Maryland's Renewable Portfolio Standard requires that 2 percent of the state's energy comes from solar by 2020. There are currently 106 megawatts of solar power online in the Old Line State.

I have recently noticed more homes in Maryland installing rooftop solar panels.

Here are some photos of Maryland rooftop residential solar and New Jersey solar panels on utility poles.
