Green Traveler: Montreal Canadiens Goal is Green! Initiative
While visiting Montreal, I toured the home arena of the Canadiens hockey team -- Bell Centre. I noticed that there are easily identifiable recycling canisters located throughout the building. In fact, there are approximately 945 recycling bins placed in concourses and offices. This is part of the Goal is Green! (Vert le But! in French) program that has been in place since 2007.
The Canadiens describe the program's mission to: "Establish the organization as an industry leader both on the ice and in the community through programs that reduce its environmental footprint, support the greening of the environment and renewable resources, and encourage its wide-ranging fanbase to do the same."
The Bell Centre has received three environmental certifications -- Ici on Recycle (Level 3), LEED-EB (Existing Building), and ISO 14001 -- the most of any venue in North America.
