Green Traveler: Las Vegas, Nevada

On a recent trip to Las Vegas, Nevada I took full advantage of the public transportation options available to visitors. While the monorail has not yet been extended to McCarran International Airport, there are multiple buses that take you to The Strip, downtown and beyond.

Since I was traveling back and forth from The Strip and downtown, I bought a pass for The Deuce bus, which is a double decker bus that makes frequent stops along Las Vegas Boulevard and runs all night. During the day I also rode the Las Vegas Monorail the entire route from The MGM Grand to The Sahara where I then transferred to the SDX Strip Downtown Express bus that makes less stops than The Deuce and thus gets you downtown faster.

While Vegas still isn't very bicycle friendly, I did see a few bike signs and bike lanes. Hopefully soon Vegas will start building more bicycle infrastructure and maybe even one day there will be a bicycle sharing scheme in Sin City.

I also noticed some casino hotels offered recycling with one casino encouraging guests to deposit everything in the trash bins for sorting later into recycling and composting.

The buses are by far more heavily used then the monorail, which is a real shame because it seems like the monorail is seen as a novelty instead of the 21st century transportation option it is in other cities around the world. This could be why it has been so slow to expand as extensions to Old Vegas and McCarran International Airport have been stalled. It is hard to build the political will to finance these monorail extensions when the state-of-the-art system is seen as something out of Disney World instead of a legitimate form of modern transit that is clean and green.
