Guest Post: Five Eco-Friendly Ways to Keep Your Home Safe and Secure
Home security is a top priority for most families. Most traditional methods of security, while efficient, are in fact energy draining. From excess electricity to security cameras to old, non-energy efficient thermostats and water heaters, keeping your home safe and secure has become excessively expensive.
With a few green tips, you can boost your home security while reducing your carbon footprint.
1. Home Security Systems
With the current trend toward eco-friendly products, it’s only natural security companies like ADT would produce energy efficient home security systems. These systems are more cost-effective, for they use less energy to run on and are made out of either recycled materials or more environmentally friendly materials.
2. Solar Lighting and Energy Efficient Light Bulbs
Solar lighting receives its energy from radiant light and heat from the sun. Instead of using electric powered lights to light the outside of your home, make the switch to solar powered lights. Based on the appearance of daylight, solar lights automatically turn on and off, and cost next to nothing to stay on overnight. Additionally, you can deck out your entry walkway lights with solar powered lanterns.
For indoor lights, look into energy efficient light bulbs. In many areas, energy efficient light bulbs are standard. Regular incandescent light bulbs are not only harmful to the environment, but they also use tons of energy, which increases the electric bill. Compact fluorescent lights are more cost-efficient, eco-friendly, and just as attractive as incandescent.
3. Thermostats and Water Heater
In older homes, original thermostats and water heaters are not nearly as energy efficient as new ones are. Replacing both the thermostat and water heater will be worth the investment, for it will be far less expensive to run both items. In terms of safety, new thermostats and water heaters are less hazardous. Old electric wiring is far more prone to fire danger in comparison to new, safer methods.
Additionally, new thermostats are programmable, which allows you to set the temperature to automatically set while you are home and away. A great feature, this option allows you to automatically save money and energy by keeping the house warmer while you are gone, and cooler while you are there to enjoy it.
4. Energy Efficient Windows
Investing in new windows will help to keep the inside of your home comfortable without using your air conditioner or heater. As windows wear out, they let air into the home, making it drafty and uncomfortable. Most older windows are single-paned, which is not as energy efficient as new, double-paned windows. Double-paned windows are more resistant to weather temperature, as well as safer, for it is much more difficult to break into a double-paned window.
5. Drought Scape
When it comes to robberies, many culprits seek out homes with thick, ornate landscaping, for it is easier to take cover underneath the foliage. Using drought-resistant landscaping both reduces your need and dependency for water and makes it more difficult for thieves to hide in the foliage since typical drought scape uses small, well-manicured plants, bark, or ground covering.
